Swimming With Sea Lions in Lima
Ever thought about swimming with wild sea lions in the open ocean? Yep, actual sea lions! This is one of those surreal experiences you can have in Lima, Peru.
Swimming with them has to be one of the craziest and most exhilarating adventures I’ve ever done. If you’re a thrill-seeking traveller, this is 100% for you.
Just off Lima’s rugged coast, near Callao, there’s a hidden spot where the ocean comes alive in ways you wouldn’t believe. And the best part? It’s only a 30-minute drive from Miraflores.
What To Expect When Swimming With Sea Lions
There are a few things to know about before you take the plunge:
The Water Is Freezing
At least it was in August! The boat provides wetsuits and life jackets, which help, but be ready for a serious chill.
Sea Lions Will Touch You
These guys are super curious and will come right up to you. Before jumping in, the instructors will teach you to lift your feet and point them towards the sea lions. It’s basically their signal to keep a little distance.
Sea Lions Stink Bad
I had no idea how bad sea lions smelled until I got close. The stench is intense and hits you the moment the boat approaches their colony. Just a heads-up!
The Ocean Is Rough
The water can get pretty choppy, so if you’re prone to seasickness, I’d definitely recommend taking some meds beforehand.
If you’re not a strong swimmer or have any physical conditions, you can always stay on the boat and watch from there.
But if you’re anything like me, you’ll get over all of this real quick. The adrenaline rush, the sheer madness of being in the water with wild sea lions- it makes every second worth it. No question, I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

Travel Insurance With Genki
I do a lot of adventure activities on my travels, and I always make sure I have travel insurance in case anything goes south. I’ve been using Genki for years, and I can’t recommend them enough. If you’re into adventure travel, having solid insurance is just common sense. Let’s be real, better safe than sorry!
And That’s A Wrap!
Swimming with sea lions in Lima is one of those wild, can’t-believe-this-is-real experiences that sticks with you long after you’ve dried off. It’s a mix of adrenaline, awe, and a little bit of “what have I just signed up for?” but trust me, it’s so worth it. If you ever find yourself in Peru, don’t skip this. Dive in, embrace the chaos, and let the sea lions welcome you into their world. You won’t regret it!
